At Naturally Nestled, we’re dedicated to creating comfortable natural and organic latex bedding products of the highest quality. However, environmentalism is also one of our company values. We stand by this principle by earning eco-friendly certifications given by objective industry and government organizations.
Check out the bona fides: Naturally Nestled products, made from components which carry several certifications, demonstrate our commitment to the environment.
Not sure what these certifications mean? We want to help you make informed decisions when shopping for our products. Read on to learn more about the Naturally Nestled environmental and textile certifications.
About Naturally Nestled organic latex and textile certifications
GOLS stands for “Global Organic Latex Standard,” which is an international independent certification standard for latex. We wrote another blog post covering GOLS certification of our latex that you can read about in more detail.
In a nutshell, GOLS certification sets strict standards for organic latex farming and production processes. Beyond requiring sustainable agricultural practices, GOLS certification requires that latex farm workers are treated humanely and paid a fair wage.
The 100% organic cotton covers for Naturally Nestled mattress toppers are made with GOTS certified fabric. The Global Organic Textile Standard certifies that the textiles used are made according to certain organic farming practices.
Why GOLS and GOTS certified products are good for the environment
Both GOLS and GOTS certifications set agricultural and production standards that prohibit the use of certain harsh fertilizers or worrisome chemicals or pesticides. These “green” practices are gentler on the planet and result in products you can feel good about having in your home. In fact, Consumer Reports deems the GOTS and GOLS certifications the best ones a bedding product can achieve.
USDA latex certification
While GOLS is a global organic certification standard for latex, the United States Department of Agriculture also certifies organic products. In order to receive this certification, products must be produced using only those specific substances listed as permissible.
The USDA certification standard also ensures that products were not produced using potentially harmful methods such as genetic engineering or ionizing radiation.
Naturally Nestled latex is certified free of harmful chemicals and toxins
While GOTS and GOLS are organic certifications, all Naturally Nestled latex products, including our 100% natural latex, are tested for the presence of harmful chemicals and toxins. Our items carry Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certification, demonstrating that our products are certified to be free of these sorts of harmful substances.
Naturally Nestled products are also carbon neutral
About carbon neutrality
Generally, carbon neutrality means acting in ways that don’t add additional carbon dioxide to the atmosphere. For businesses, this can mean reducing emissions produced through manufacturing or by vehicles delivering products. It can also be achieved by offsetting the carbon produced by a company through planting new trees.
The goal of carbon neutral companies is to eliminate or reduce certain negative environmental impacts while also adding positive ones, thereby achieving a neutral impact on the planet.
Many companies including Microsoft and Amazon have announced plans to become carbon neutral. However, fewer businesses have already achieved that goal. Naturally Nestled latex is in good company with carbon neutral companies including trendy comfy shoe brand Allbirds, major healthcare organization Kaiser Permanente, and outdoor gear retailer REI.
Naturally Nestled latex is biodegradable
In addition to our environmentally friendly certifications, the 100% natural and organic latex used in Naturally Nestled products is inherently biodegradable.
Researchers at Northwestern University and the University of Minnesota recently developed a method for upcycling polyfoam, including memory foam mattresses and other synthetic foam bedding products. However, keep in mind that upcycling polyfoam products–which are made from petrochemicals–isn’t as eco-friendly as developing biodegradable products like those made from 100% natural and organic latex foam.
At Naturally Nestled, we offer mattress toppers and pillows made from two types of latex: 100% natural latex and certified organic latex. These are both made from biodegradable latex, which is better for the environment than toppers made from synthetic memory foam, which is manufactured using petrochemicals.
